In the June issue of Vogue, Kelly Gilbert explores the future of health and beauty.


Technology will play a significant role in the future and for Dawood & Tanner the future is very much here already!

Kelly visited the practice and in the article discusses how gums have just got sexy!

It's the dental speciality known as Periodontics and we are lucky enough to have a team of specialist and expert periodontists at the practice all using cutting edge technology on a daily basis, to make treatment less invasive and better planned.

They also went to mention our delicious tooth cleanser.  Gums just love it!

Vitality Show

We were so pleased to be able to go to the Vitality Show at Earl's Court this year.

Full of all things health it was a great way of seeing new products and services in the health industry. We were also delighted that our product was in the Women's Health Goodie Bags. Celebrating their launch at the show with some fabulous giveaways we were really happy to receive some great feedback from people at the show new to the product.

I think we'll definitely be booking our ticket for next year!

Susan Tanner was recently interviewed for this piece in The Times Cosmetic Dentistry Supplement by the lovely Alice Hart-Davis.

The subject was the power of the smile and how this can effect your confidence.

"We see this sort of blossoming transformation nearly everyday," she says. "When we give someone back the confidence to smile, whether by eliminating a stained filling in a front tooth or by giving them a full arch of implant restorations, it seems to transform the way they use their facial muscles. It is a great source of pleasure to us. I can't tell you how many times patients come back after treatment having reinvented themselves. It sounds like a cliche, but we really do have patients who have married, got the new job, or even started a singing career after dental treatment."

How to look after your dentures? A question asked in today's Daily Mail by Angela Epstein.

We know a thing or two about dentures here, so Dr Susan Tanner was more than happy to help answer!

"Never use harsh products such as bleach to clean them. Instead use a soft-bristled toothbrush and either toothpaste or a drop of mild liquid soap to clean them twice a day. Stain-removing tablets also work, but using a brush as well helps remove all dirt and bacteria".

Where have you been all my life??

I have looked high and low to find a non mint toothpaste. Since being a child I have gagged on every toothpaste I have ever tried and this has continued into adulthood. The only non mint I could find was one without fluoride and it has done my teeth no favours unfortunately.

So, I have bought your lime toothpaste for me and the lemon one for my daughter. I have just tried a little of the lime on my finger and rubbed it around my mouth, a bit fearful there would be even the slightest minty flavour to it but it tastes superb.

Well done you! Please do not stop producing it and you will have a customer for life! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Mouth Cancer Action Month

Mouth Cancer Action Month is run by the British Dental Health Foundation, in association with Denplan. It calls on all dental professionals to help educate members of the general public about a disease that kills more people in the UK than testicular and cervical cancer combined using the tagline "If In Doubt, Get Checked Out".

The Foundation estimates around 6,000 new cases a year are diagnosed in the UK, and one person dies every five hours from the disease. With statistics like this action really has to be taken to raise awareness and encourage us to be more vigilent about our oral health. Early detection raises survival chances from only half to a 9 out of 10 survival rate.

Dental hygienists and therapists have a particularly important role to play. Ascertaining information about the patient's lifestyle before an examination will give a better idea of their risk.

Smoking is still the main cause of mouth cancer, and with two thirds of smokers wanting to give up, Mouth Cancer Action Month is the perfect opportunity for health professionals to encourage smokers to do so.

Drinking to excess is another risk factor, with those who drink and smoke heavily up to 30 times more likely to get mouth cancer. Poor diet, ethnic chewing tobacco such as paan and guthka are also risk factors.

So "If in doubt, get checked out"!!

It's always interesting to see peoples reactions to new and different things. So when that reaction is such a positive one it's hard not to want to shout about it!!!

Thank you to the lovely Claire at Trend Life who wrote the beautiful piece below. She said to me that she absolutely loved them and that we had changed her life! She continued "Well to me you are the Tooth Fairy, and in time, I hope you visit the homes of millions of people, because I think Dawood & Tanner tooth cleansers should be in everyone's bathroom!

In the write up Susan Tanner encourages us all to go and see our hygienist. As well as keeping our teeth in tip top condition, it's the prerfect way of combating that dreaded bad breath!

Susan says we should be brushing twice a day and flossing regularly. The big no no... smoking. Not only do you end up with the taste of an ash tray in your mouth, the nicotine in cigarettes causes blood vessels to get smaller and stop the body's natural responses to healing gums.

Back to school means back to making packed lunches and we must take care of what we pack in our children's lunch boxes.

Sugary treats like biscuits, sweets and fruity snacks mix with bacteria in the sticky plaque that constantly forms on teeth to generate acid, which can wear away enamel and cause tooth decay.

By lowering children's sugar intake, it's not just good for their teeth but also for their overall health too. Also, they won't suffer the lethargic feeling left by a sugar crash in the afternoon.

Think about substituting the not so healthy foods with alternatives such as fresh fruit and vegetables, baked crisps or whole grain crackers. Not only will this be kinder to their teeth but will leave them bright eyed and bushy tailed for lots of post lunch learning!
